Unusual Gifts to Make a Real Impact
What do you buy someone who already has everything? When you ask someone what they want for their birthday they always say "oh I don't know" or "I have everything". Buying Christmas or birthday presents can be difficult. We are all guilty of buying the usual bottle of perfume, chocolates or flowers but little thought goes into buying these and they are a bit of a cop out!
There is nothing better than getting a surprise on your birthday. A present that you really love, and which you were surprised to receive. Sadly this rarely happens. I can pretty much guess what my friends, children and family have bought me when it's my birthday. I don't mind as I am grateful but sometimes I wish they didn't waste their money. The presents I love the most and remember from year to year are the ones that are not the usual gifts but something that you know came with a lot of thought behind it. They say you can't beat a handmade card and it's true. I would much rather my children make me a unique card that took time and effort rather than a typical card from a card shop.
So how do you go about buy a unique gift for someone? Well you need to think about the person you are buying for. Do they have any hobbies if so what are they? If they love gardening, golf or any other sport you should be able to look for something on theme. Maybe they love music in which case you could find out their favourite artist and look for something unique relating to the musician. Most bands have websites selling items from their tours and so on. If they have no hobbies why not look around their homes and draw some ideas there. You might notice they like antique items or really modern art. With a bit of investigation you should be able to get some clues as to what would make a good gift.
The internet is a great place for finding unusual items as many people set up websites rather than have shops in towns and villages. There are thousands of unusual gift shops online by all sorts of enthusiasts, not just the general retail shops. Many people set up a store as a bit of a hobby and sell items that are of interest to them. So if the person you are buying for loves pigs or are just passionate about a TV program you can guarantee someone else is also keen and has a website dedicated to that subject. Even if they don't sell items they might well have links to stores that are of interest to them.
There really are no excuses to finding that special gift. With a little bit of time and effort searching the internet you should easily find a great gift that will make your friend smile and make their birthday or Christmas. If you're lucky the thought might get returned and one day you will receive a really thoughtful unusual present that you will really love.

Groovy Gift Ideas for New Bubs
With the arrival of Little Mister Number 1 so too were there flower arrangements – when I say flower arrangements I could have opened a florist. Don’t get me wrong they were beautiful and looked expensive but after a while the smell was so strong that it made me dizzy and I was worried that the pollen was affecting my precious bundle’s breathing. I ended up throwing them away on the way home from the hospital.
With the arrival of Little Mister Number 2 I received some more flowers, however these didn’t require watering and they weren’t going to die in a few days. A gorgeous boxed arrangement of blooms made from an assortment of bibs, socks and bodysuits was delivered to the hospital. Some have a huge selection of bouquets and boxed arrangements plus a range of other themed packs. A cute idea is a ‘kebub’ – rolled to look like a kebab this pack is made up of various baby essentials including socks, a bodysuit, bib, singlet and face washer.
Other groovy gift ideas include:
Photo frames: There is a wide selection of photo frames that you can find at most department stores, gift shops and photo processing shops. I received a frame that contained a space for a pic for each month of baby’s first year – great for seeing how your little one changed in its first year. There are other similar frames on the market where you can feature a photo for each school year. What about a digital picture frame? All you do is stick a memory card into the frame and it displays a slideshow of your pictures. Some frames even allow you to add music and there are many different finishes to choose from. You can find these at most department stores, small electrical appliance retailers or online.
What if it’s Baby Number 2 you’re buying for? If Baby Number 2 is a different sex, clothes are always an option however if not, chances are baby will have a lot of hand-me-downs or items that Baby Number 1 didn’t get a chance to wear. So what about a gift that the child can enjoy a little bit later on? Books are always a fantastic idea. With so many available you can buy something to suit the child when they are six months old, a toddler, preschooler or beyond.
Something personalized: If you are the crafty type why not personalize your gift. For both of my boys a dear friend of my mother’s gave me a towel with a panel featuring bub’s name in cross stitch. If you’re not that handy with a needle you can get a towel, bunny rug or blanket embroidered with the baby’s name. Most shopping centres have a retailer that offers this facility. What about a wooden puzzle featuring your baby’s name? My toddler is starting to really enjoy puzzles and the one where each piece is a letter of his name is his favourite. Another great personalized gift available is a cushion featuring a picture of your little one. Images are printed onto fabric and then made up as a cushion. When they get a bit grubby you can toss them in the wash. This lovely keepsake can be given as a voucher to be redeemed when mum or dad is ready with that favourite picture.
Sporting stuff. The dads get a kick (excuse the pun) out of this one. You can buy that little sport star some gear in their dad’s (well let’s face it, it’s usually the dads!) favourite team’s colours. They have official AFL and NRL baby supporters merchandise. AFL packs include a romper, beanie and scarf and NRL packs feature rompers, bibs and booties.
And last but certainly not least – MUM. One of the best presents I received was for me and only me! A little bit of well deserved pampering in the comfort of my home. Some offer Pamper Mummy packages*. I highly recommend the Deluxe Pedicure but you can choose from five treatments – 1.5 hours of pure bliss.
So these are just some ideas that are a little bit different and groovy…happy shopping!

Gift Ideas For Christmas 2008
Christmas is coming, and it's time to start thinking about what gifts you'll be putting under the tree for your loved ones this year. Finding the perfect present for each person on your list can often prove to be a tough task, especially if you're an adult out of touch with the latest teen trends or a kid who has no idea what size sweater your parents wear. Here are some helpful gift ideas to jumpstart your Christmas shopping season:
- For Him: We all know men love their gadgets. Whether you're looking for your dad or boyfriend, Swiss army knives and electronic sports watches often make for good presents. Electronic wine openers, leather wallets and poker sets are also items that any special man in your life might enjoy.
- For Her: They say diamond's are a girl's best friend, but if that's not in your budget, consider nice earrings or perfume. Spa kits, makeup sets or a bouquet of flowers will also make her feel like a million dollars.
- For Kids: For young girls, think DVDs or toys related to Hannah Montana, High School Musical or any of the shows on the Disney Channel. For boys, Guitar Hero or any other video games will be sure to set off smiles on Christmas morning.
- For Pets: Cater to your cat or canine with holiday-themed presents, like reindeer antlers or Santa stuffed dolls. Other products, like no-bark collars or I.D. chips, benefit both owner and pet.
- For Friends or Secret Santas: Who doesn't enjoy a good gag gift? Tickle your pals' funny bones with Christmas-themed gag gifts, like a Night Before Christmas Leg Lamp or Homer Simpson D'Oh Ho Ho Stocking. Talking toilet paper spindles, inflatable moose heads and a "Control a Woman" remote could also get your buddies laughing.
Of course being in the digital age, all will enjoy the gift of an iPod, digital camera, computer or any other high-tech item. Candy, fine wine or other gourmet gift baskets also are make for good presents in general. Just remember though, it's that you thought to give a gift rather than what's specifically inside that is most important of all.

Milestone Wedding Anniversary Gift Ideas
Milestone wedding anniversaries are often celebrated through gatherings with family and friends. Though it isn’t necessary, there are guidelines as to the types gifts given to the couple celebrating their anniversary. Whether you’re traditional or modern, there are many ideas with each type. Below you’ll find the types of gifts given with each milestone anniversary and ideas for those types.
5 years
Wood (Traditional) / Silverware (Modern)
Ideas for wooden items can include furniture, decorative signs or displays, clocks, coat racks, jewelry boxes or even art pieces. Many items are wood-trimmed or accented with wood. Wooden items can be hand-crafted, customized or personalized for a unique and heartfelt gift.
Silverware can refer to flatware or utensils, but also to gifts made of silver. For instance, jewelry, photo frames, candlesticks, coins, jewelry boxes or cases, and mirrors. There are a great number of elegant keepsakes with silver accents that make great gifts for couples celebrating their fifth wedding anniversary.
10 years
Tin, Aluminum (Traditional) / Diamond (Modern)
Many decorative items and keepsakes have tin or aluminum accents or trim. A few items that may contain tin or aluminum and make great gifts for married couples are clocks, fans, or even gift baskets that include tin or aluminum cans of coffee, food, etc.
Diamonds are most often found in jewelry like bracelets, rings, earrings and watches, but they can also be found in other keepsakes that make great gifts. Visit your local jewelry and diamond store for more ideas.
15 years
Crystal (Traditional) / Watches (Modern)
For the traditional gift, crystal is often found in jewelry, but can also be found in light fixtures, dishes, wind chimes and more.
For the modern gift, there are countless types and styles of watches that would make great gifts for a couple celebrating their fifteenth wedding anniversary.
20 years
China (Traditional) / Platinum (Modern)
The traditional version of this traditional gift would be china dishware. A creative interpretation would allow for an oriental gift basket, gift certificates for Chinese restaurants or markets, or Chinese herbs and teas.
There are a variety of jewelry items made from platinum (which is more precious than gold), like bracelets, rings, and earrings. The scientific element of platinum also plays a role in the art world with print-making, so a print could make a great gift for this anniversary, too.
25 years
Silver (Traditional) / Sterling Silver (Modern)
Silver is found in many, many items that make good gifts, such as jewelry, various collectibles, coins, musical instruments, kitchen utensils or cookware, and mirrors.
Sterling Silver is an alloy of silver and is used often in items able to be engraved, making them great gifts to personalize for the couple.
30 years
Pearl (Traditional) / Diamond (Modern)
Pearls are most often used in jewelry (and are also the birthstone of those born in June). There are also religious implications associated with the gemstone, as it is mentioned in several religious tomes. Therefore, religious items may also be suitable.
Diamonds, like pearls, are most often found in jewelry.
40 years
Ruby (Traditional) / Ruby (Modern)
Both traditional and modern gifts for this anniversary involve the gemstone ruby. Like others, it can be found often in jewelry, like pendants, bracelets and earrings. Rubies are also the gemstone of persons born in July, are associated with the Sun in astrology, and are very highly valued in Asian countries.
50 years
Gold (Traditional) / Gold(Modern)
Gold, suitable for traditional and modern gifts for the couple celebrating their fiftieth anniversary, can be found in jewelry, as well as many other decorative items. A few good gift ideas for this anniversary are coins, collectibles, photograph frames, watches, artwork, and some items can even contain gold thread.
For unique ideas, look for items, businesses or even places with the key words in their names. For instance, “Crystal Cruises” “Gold Canyon,” makers of aromatherapy candles, or “Ruby Falls” America’s highest underground waterfall. There are many choices to make when choosing a suitable, memorable and meaningful gift for the couple celebrating a milestone anniversary.
